Tango Suite World Premiere

A week from Saturday my “Tango Suite” for string orchestra will be getting its world premiere as part of the Englewood Arts Concert Series.  It’s part of the grand finale for the Chamber Music of the Masters season and I’ll be sharing the bill with Mozart, Gershwin and Bartok.  I hope I can measure up!  Sadly, I’m unable to attend myself but I’m having the concert recorded (both audio and video) so I’ll have something to share with you soon.  Or, better yet, if you’re anywhere near Englewood go check it out for yourself!

From the press release:

Englewood Arts Presents’ grand finale of its Chamber Music of the Masters season will be the annual tribute concert in memory of Olga Wolosyn, beloved former mayor of Englewood and a true champion for Englewood Arts Presents.  Performers will be CSO musicians performing in the Up Close and Musical ensemble under the direction of Eric Bertoluzzi.

The program:

Mozart                           Divertimento in D major

Grieg                               The Last Spring

Hindemith                    Five Pieces for String Orchestra

Jonathan Geer     Tango Suite

Gershwin                       Lullaby

Bartok                            Romanian Folk Dances

Manami Matsumae

Manami Matsumae

I have some incredibly exciting news to share with you today.  ( well it’s incredibly exciting for me anyway! )  The kickstarter for Heart Forth, Alicia has exceeded everyone’s expectations and the team has been able to add some stretch goals to the project.  One of them, which was just recently surpassed, involves bringing Manami Matsumae (Mega Man, Shovel Knight, Mighty No.9) on board to compose music for specific parts of the game.

Manami will also be heavily involed in a remix album of my original score for the game.  She, along with a handful of other game composers will remix 10 to 12 tracks from my score.  The other composers have not yet been decided but here is just a sample of who we have to choose from at this point:

  • Keiji Yamagishi (of Ninja Gaiden)
  • Saori Kobayashi (of NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon series)
  • Yumiko Takahashi (of Suikoden)
  • Akira Yamaoka (of Silent Hill) [He alone costs $5000 per track. Not my number, but his agency.]
  • Ippo Yamada (of Mega Man Zero, MM9 & 10, Mighty No. 9)
  • Jake Kaufman (DuckTales Remastered, Shovel Knight)
  • Eirik Suhrke (Spelunky, Ridiculous Fishing)
  • Ben Prunty (FTL)
  • Chipzel (Super Hexagon)
  • Ian Stocker (Adventure Time, Escape Goat)

I’m so excited to be collaborating with Manami as Mega Man was one of my absolute favorite games growing up.  I’m sitting here in my home studio right now and I havve a recreation of the blue bomber made with PostIt Notes hanging on my wall.  I even carved a Mega Man pumpkin one year for Halloween!

My Shanghai

This summer I’ll be scoring a documentary called “My Shanghai” directed by Pam Wells of First Straw Films.  It tells the story of Virginia McCutcheon, a civilian who was imprisoned by the Japanese during World War II.  Pam is running a kickstarter to raise some money for the film so check it out if you have a minute or two.

Tour Videos

APQ (the Austin Piazzolla Quintet) went on tour in Colorado at the beginning of the month and after a bit of a rocky start things went smashingly.  We got to play at some great venues for some very receptive audiences.  Our second album, Lo Que Vendrá, is now available to purchase online at Bandcamp.  You can listen to it in the sidebar to the right or just head over to Bandcamp to check it out.

I’ve posted a couple videos below from our performance at the Denver Public Library.  That place is huge!  We were in a very nice recital space on the 7th floor.  Strangely, I never saw many books in this purported library.  If you’d like to see the entire show or other APQ videos go HERE.

APQ in Colorado

I play with a group called the Austin Piazzolla Quintet (APQ) and we just returned from a short tour in Colorado.  We got off to a bit of a rocky start missing our first show because of a flight that was delayed by 10 hours, but the rest of the tour went incredibly well.  We took lots of pictures and videos.  Posted below are a couple of my original pieces that we performed at the Denver Public Library.  Enjoy!
